Thread Review for £28,000 for driving a train? (newest post first)

THIS IS WHY THEY DESERVE NOTHING (although it was station staff)

Aye, the lovely people at Scotrail told my wife on Friday coming up from Glasgow to Aberdeen that they had to CHANGE trains at Perth after 1-1/2 hours delay to get there. (left Queen Street 1540, arrive Aberdeen 1910)

My wife is in a wheelchair and he said that he was to busy to get her off the train as he could not find the ramp (rush hour). She pointed out that there was a ramp right there in the train....

the reply was -

'I don't know that and don't get lippy with me'....

If there was a fire she would be dead!

F*CK ALL AT SCOTRAIL / NATIONAL EXPRESS....I got exactly the same treatment when I was still in my wheelchair.

THEY DO NOT DESERVE ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!!

LAZY, LYING & VERY OVERPAID BAS*ARDS THEM ALL !!!!

....DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING OUT ON THE DISBALED....THE NETWORK IS A FECKIN DISGRACE AND IS GETTING WORSE YEAR BY YEAR....

THE STAFF's attitude is just as bad.

IT IS NOT THE PASSENGERS FAULT AND IF IT COMPROMISES THEIR SAFETY THE STAFF INVOLVED SHOULD BE SACKED ON THE SPOT!

You would not believe the shi*e the disabled put up with in this country....if you are bored enough, I'll tell you in MacAndrews.

...END OF RANT....

Cheers fro the insights Ezzy,

With these you need to start on the premise that it ain't black and white. It does sound like the union leadership may have handled the PR ineptly. However when the 'Labour' party want to call the dogs out out then the unions and the Daily Re*ard do what they are there for and the right wing press are hardly gonnie be any different.
Hope it all works out well in the end and glad to see some ordinary fowks getting a decent salary for a change!!

I thought I'd better keep out of this one but here goes...

I don't work for Scotrail so I'm not involved in this dispute so there's no need for me to defend myself though I do of course support my brothers in their attempts to achieve parity with other drivers. (As I would support nurses, teachers etc if they were seeking to achieve a better deal).

I can understand why some people are envious and I agree there are other jobs that would be paid more if wages were decided according to what they deserve but unfortunately capitalism doesn't work that way. So comparisons with other jobs are irrelevant (does a mediocre Scottish footballer deserve to earm more than a nurse, teacher, etc?)

Simple facts are that since privatisation none of the 35 train operating companies in the UK have been interested in the expensive business of recruiting & training drivers, preferring to recruit qualified drivers requiring minimal training from other operators. In order to do so they have had to offer more money than their competitors, a company like Scotrail which is pays lower than GNER, EWS, DRS, Freightliner and Virgin (the other companies with drivers based in Scotland) is constantly losing staff. So much so that they rely on drivers working their days off in order to run over 25% of services. It's the duty of the unions to get the best possible deal for the members and as Scotrail need to get the salary up in order to retain drivers and even recruit from the other companies they can expect to achieve a good settlement.
Drivers didn't ask for privatisation indeed we opposed it all the way and ASLEF policy is for re-nationalisation and a return to national pay bargaining but in terms of salary we have definitely benefited and are quite right to take full advantage of a situation not of our making.

Having said that I think that they made a big mistake announcing the strike dates so far in advance and targeting the CL final was always going to unpopular and leave an open goal for the likes of the Daily Record to exploit. Most people who read the front page DR article last week (when they sent their people round to harass a union official at his home) would have been unaware that this so called 'drivers leader' is nothing to do with drivers and is infact a member of the RMT who represent only a handful of drivers the rest being members of ASLEF. Not only do drivers not have leaders, we have elected representatives but they couldn't even get the right union!

Scotland on Sunday printed more inaccuracies yesterday as well and if people believe this sort of nonsense then it's no wonder there is little sympathy from the public.

Getting back to the point of whether a strike on the day of the CL final will affect our 2008 chances, the answer is no because I don't believe there's any chance it will happen, having said that I also believe that there's no chance of a successful joint 2008 bid anyway.

Oh for God sake why not slag off the corporate rip-offs? This is tabloid driven divide and conquer tripe. Policemen get those wages and they should be the least payed of the public services. Teachers in Germany get payed a lot more than this. Why don't we argue for paying everyone proper wage? Then we can talk about greed among our fellow citizens. Sack them all? It takes a year to train them. If they don't get the same wages as south of the border they will migrate South and Scotland will loose even more population and the trains will be a disaster area for a couple of years.
If people don't stand up for a proper minimum wage should they be mouthing off when people fight their own corner? Scotland is the most socially divided country in Western Europe, many of our people live in squalor and yet we all troop of to foreign countries proclaiming how great we are? It's about time we behaved like a proud and humane national community rather than like a self destructive lynch mob!

Fenris Posted on 11:52 am on Mar. 25, 2002
Aye, 28k to drive a train!

Surgeons who study for 6 years and then train (no pun) for a further 4 years are paid not a great deal more than this. Indeed, the train drivers would probably be better off with all the overtime & bonus's they crave..

An absolute joke - I'd sack them all.

A mans a man for all that you know!!!!

Phil MaGlass Posted on 10:56 am on Mar. 25, 2002
Simple if you cannae get the trains running then move the Final to Murrayfield right in the city buses, taxis you cannae not miss the game then fuq being held to ransom by greedy bastard train drivers 28,000 quid -off their fuqin trolleys if you ask me or should that be off their bogeys.

Craigos Posted on 10:25 am on Mar. 25, 2002
Sorry Ezzy, honest!  I'd be interested to hear what you think about the whole shebang.  A smoothly run Champions League final, and Euro 2008, or a corking pay rise?

Tam Posted on 12:48 am on Mar. 25, 2002
Not entirely up to speed on this either but from what I can gather the Train drivers want parity with their Ingerlish colleagues.

Would they be happy with 87%, same as MEP's?

Isn't it interesting that the Scottish Executive didn't believe the independant findings of the 2008 feasability report but they believed the independant findings telling them they should be paid more money!

W*nkers!!!!!

HebridesBarEdinburgh Posted on 11:02 pm on Mar. 24, 2002
oh well Ezzy will no be going to the Heb on Wednesday now then!

Didn't want to offend you Ezzy (crawling) as you are probably more informed on the internal situation than us, but until i am better educated in the facts , still feel the same.

Ruary Posted on 8:56 pm on Mar. 24, 2002
I didnt want to say anything Tam, just wondered if Ezzy was going to defend himself

Tam Posted on 7:47 pm on Mar. 24, 2002
Craigos,
nice knowing you dude!

Ezzy, the Tartan Army board administrator, creator and other words ending with 'or' is actually a train driver!

And who said scotland was "foot in mouth" free?

:-)

HebridesBarEdinburgh Posted on 3:52 pm on Mar. 24, 2002
Teachers, Nurses, Police, Fire service, Paramedics are all on less than £28,000 a year. Be thankfull fellas that you've got well paid jobs.

Just my opinion.

sonny Posted on 11:42 am on Mar. 24, 2002
Aye,
A know what yae mean. Remember though that wages here are well below the European average. The train drivers are only getting what the EU would consider an average wage. If you look at it like that you might think the train drivers are showing the rest of us the way. Slagging them off seems like envy to me. Either that or the tories drummed a slave mentality into us all? Upstairs downstairs victorianism has at last been challenged and I'm content with that.

sorry sonny, got to disagree with ye there, i too believe that the fat cats get paid too much and most workers below them don't get paid enough, but can anybody actually say that £28,000 is not enough to drive a feckin train?

seriously, £28,000 is more than what they actually first wanted and they are now taking the piss, it may be a socialist view that everybody that works under a fat cat should be paid more - but if it was up to me, i'd give them hee haw, the deserve nothing for the way they have gone about this, scotrail however should have sorted it a long time ago and the responsibility does lie with them.

i hope it is sorted out b4 the euro cup final, the smooth running of our 2008 bid purely relies on how this goes and as i have said since the sole bid was rejected, the joint bid has not a hope in hell and its not mcconnell who will kicked in the teeth when it fails, it will be all the decent TA people on this board and elsewhere.

May save Hampden's reputation along the way.

As for the train drivers, all my adult life I've been hearing about workers getting less and less and the fat cats gettin more and more, so I just can't bring myself to slag them off.
